'88-'89 Supercharged

At the time, the SC (Supercharged) 4A-GZE engine was a unique way to solve one of few obvious short-comings of the early Mk I MR2 - not enough hp/torque to justify the high purchase and insurance costs. One of the first production automotive engines to utilize a roots-type positive-displacement supercharger, the 40% torque increasewas enough to transform the MR2. With instant torque up to about 5500 rpm, throttle induced over-steer was not only a reality but a daily occurance. And although a distrubing option to enthusiasts, the automatic transmission option transformed the car into a stop-light warrior - at any speed, wide-open-throttle and full-torque would shoot the car forward wherever it was pointed.

'88-'89 Supercharged - parts

Front-end parts for the MR2? Locating body parts can be a true effort, with the habit of MR2s to run into things (and not being run into) and the propensity of the Mk I to rust in snow/salt climates. Fortunately, most of the body/trim parts for the SC are shared with the normally aspirated MR2, the SC engine-lid being the most obvious unique part. But locating SC-specific parts can be a challenge.

'91-'95 Turbo

Possibly one of the most produced Unique Toyotas, the Turbo solved all concerns of hp/torque and the MR2. Utilizing an updated engine design, shared with the CelicaAll-Trac Turbo (aka GT-4), and never known to have been available with an automatic transmission in any market worldwide, the performance/reliability of this engine has the potential of making the 3S-GTE one of the top-5 engines ever shipped from Japan. And being based on the S-series engine, the Turbo's powerplant has just about all the right fitting to be transplanted into just about any car that was delivered with an S-series engine from the factory.

'91-'95 Turbo - parts

The differences between Mk II Turbo/NA parts and Mk I SC/NA parts occur in two significant ways - not only do the Mk II Turbo/NA platforms have many more unique parts between each other then the Mk I SC/NA, but unlike the single-revision Mk I SC the Mk II Turbo has a major parts revision split between '91-'92 and '93-'95. Upgrading '91-92 Turbo parts to the '93-'95 parts is popular, but the early Mk II Turbos are much more plentiful.
